Activity report: Spring School of Primary Immunodeficiencies 2026
The Spring School of Primary Immunodeficiencies 2026, held in Prague from April 16 to 18, brought together 19 participants from 12 countries across Europe and the Americas: Costa Rica, Croatia, Czechia, Honduras, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Switzerland, Turkey, and the UK. This international group of early-career clinicians and researchers joined senior experts in inborn errors of immunity for three days of focused scientific exchange, case-based learning, and discussion.
Academic and scientific programme
This year’s programme was organised into four thematic blocks: antibody disorders, immune dysregulation, T cells and combined IEI, and innate immunity, autoinflammation, abscesses and granulomas. Across these sessions, participants presented challenging clinical cases and research observations that highlighted the complexity of diagnosis and management in this rapidly developing field.
The invited lecture programme reflected both clinical depth and methodological innovation. Kimberly Gilmour opened the school with a lecture on immune investigations in IEI, focusing on current perspectives and future opportunities. Other invited talks addressed SCID and related disorders, new treatment approaches for genetic immune dysregulation, the use of Human Phenotype Ontology and GenIA, and susceptibility to fungal infections in IEI. The faculty included Kimberly Gilmour, Maarja Soomann, Tadej Avcin, Markéta Bloomfield, Adam Klocperk, and Anna Šedivá.
Case presentations and discussion
A central part of the Spring School was the participant presentation programme, which covered a wide range of clinically relevant topics, including CVID and immune dysregulation, PI3K pathway defects, STAT3 GOF syndrome, chronic EBV infection, transplantation in combined immunodeficiency, 22q11.2 deletion syndrome, and disorders associated with susceptibility to infection, granulomatous disease, or autoinflammation. The diversity of cases supported lively discussion and created space for shared learning across centres and countries.
Social and cultural programme
Alongside the scientific sessions, the Spring School also included a social programme in Prague, with a visit to the Museum of Prague exhibition and a walk through the Old Town. Shared dinners and informal conversations offered further opportunities to build professional connections and strengthen the collaborative spirit of the meeting.
Venue
The Spring School was hosted by the Second Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, at the Plzeňská campus in Prague, with parts of the evening programme taking place at venues across the city.
The Spring School of Primary Immunodeficiencies 2026 again showed how valuable focused educational meetings can be for connecting clinical practice, translational thinking, and international collaboration in the field of inborn errors of immunity.
