Event report
The Spring PID School 2024 took place in Kutna Hora from April 18th to April 20th, 2024. Organized by the primary immunodeficiency group with the Department of Immunology, 2nd Faculty of Medicine, Charles University and University Hospital in Motol, it brought together 23 participants from 12 different countries - Czechia, United Kingdom, Germany, Croatia, Greece, Estonia, Moldova, Romania, Italy, Portugal, some coming from as far as the United States of America or Nepal!
Together we presented both educational clinical case reports and clinical research on T cell and thymus biology, B cells and humoral immunodeficiencies, innate immune defects and autoinflammatory conditions. The faculty opened sections with fascinating keynote lectures - prof. Walter shared her team's work on immune dysregulation in combined immunodeficiencies, as. prof. Kreins summarized the pathology and treatment options for thymic disorders, prof. Hauck presented how his team elucidated a monogenic cause of systemic lupus erythematosus and prof. Kalina showed us how to use flow cytometry to quickly and accurately assess primary immunodeficiency.
As is tradition, the second day of the school was capped off with a tour of the incredible St. Barbara cathedral and a beautiful organ concert.
All of us from Czechia and from abroad are thankful to have had this opportunity to learn from each other and see how patient care is lead in different countries with different healthcare systems. We appreciate the financial support of the Jeffrey Modell Foundation and Pharming which made this event possible and hope to organize this unique meeting again next year, with equally great faculty and more colleagues from across Europe.
